Intermittent catheterisation in children September 2016 Appendix A Suggested Step-by-step plan for teaching parents catheterisation Intended for nurses/nurse practitioners teaching parents how to catheterise their child. Instructions for self-catheterisation 1. Read the personal details, medical file and indication for catheterisation 2. Check that the parents have understood the reason for catheterisation and correct technique. Discuss motivation and problem areas (related to parents' work obligations, childcare etc.) 3. Explain the order of the instructions 4. Use an instruction brochure to explain the anatomy and function of the bladder and kidneys. Show where the catheter is inserted and how the urine comes out 5. Show the different types of catheters 6. Let them feel a dry and wet catheter 7. To be done by the nurse: discuss and demonstrate the procedure step-by-step using an instructional doll 8. To be done by the parents: lay out the catheter materials 9. Wash the hands 10. Hang up the catheter ready for use 11. Clean the urethral opening 12. Remove the catheter from the packaging and hold firmly 13. Insert catheter into doll 14. If desired, the nurse catheterises the child the first time so that parents can see where the catheter should be inserted, and they will be more confident when doing it themselves 15. The parents insert the catheter into the child 16. The nurse gives instructions and where necessary adjusts the parents’ technique by hand 17. Encourage and compliment the parents at every step Evaluation 18. Assess and report progress 19. Evaluate/Discuss parents' experiences 20. Discuss which catheter is right for the child 21. Discuss the frequency of catheterisation required 22. Explain how to order further products, and any financial arrangements necessary 23. Explain about possible complications (mainly UTI and false passage) and what to do in case of complications
