In April the 15th meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Urology Nurse Group (ESPUN) took place in Antalya, Turkey.
Antalya is Turkey's principal holiday resort in the Mediterranean region and is an attractive city with shady palm-lined boulevards, and a prize-winning marina on the Mediterranean. In the picturesque old quarter, we had Kaleici, with its narrow winding streets and old wooden houses above the ancient city walls. What a perfect location for our congress when even the volcanic dust could not stop us from attending this meeting.
The aims of the ESPUN is to share knowledge and experiences between nurses and other paramedical staff with in the field of paediatric urology. To help increase the quality of care we give whilst supporting nurses and urotherapists in their clinical, professional and research practices. The nurse group now has 86 members and there are 13 countries represented in ESPUN.
The objectives of the ESPUN are also to develop and maintain an international network group with in paediatric urology nursing.
English is the official language of the ESPUN but not the first language of all members. To assist with these differences all nurses were invited to attend an English language course, sponsored by Astra Tech. The course had 11 participants all keen to learn more of the English language.
The ESPUN scientific meeting opened with a guest lecture from Veronica swallow titled “The needs of parents who have children with chronic disease” followed by 2 abstract sessions; functional disorders/incontinence and enuresis then clinical practice. Friday’s meeting opened with Piet Hoebeke presenting a lecture on the “Disorders of sex development and transitional care” followed by our abstract submissions on the same theme. Next were our 2 case presentations on DSD, from Caroline Sanders (UK) and Natalie Fort (France) and this subject was concluded with a very lively panel discussion.
The ESPUN prizes for the nurses went to; June Rogers, United Kingdom who received the prize for best research paper; “Study to Investigate the Efficacy of Sound Based Intervention to improve toilet training outcomes” and Shirley Sinnott and Sarah Doyle, United Kingdom for the best clinical practice; “Hospital play specialist (HPS) Administration of Entonox as prescribed by an Independent Practitioner During Urodynamic Urethral Catheterisation.”
In conclusion it was an excellent informative meeting in which we once again came together with both new and old friends. We very much look forward to meeting you all again in Copenhagen Denmark on the 27th-30th April 2011 for our next congress.

Secretary ESPUN
