- Letter from President
Sweden, August 2007
Dear members,
Another summer is soon over, and I am doing some reflections
of the ESPUN´s activities lately. But first some words of the
weather, which has not been quite as nice as all people
wants when having some time off. Everyone has been talking about the
bad weather;
rain and showers, cold wind and all low pressures
standing in a line waiting to wet us down. However, I am not sure
that everyone is completely
disappointed – me for example who have had a lot of work to
do inside, such as painting. For this purpose the
weather has been just perfect. You do not have to think about going
to the beach or
to sit back in the sun. No excuses for being inside – just perfect.
Last November the board of ESPUN had their meeting in Ghent where
our treasurer Catherine Renson and Katty van Cauvenberghe did their
absolutely best to make us feel comfortable and welcome (and of course
ready to work). We planned for the congress in Bruges and made the
programme and discussed the abstracts submitted.
Then to the congress in Bruges, which you may think was only one
day’s programme and not as much to do or plan for – but
I can tell you there is. We did not receive as many abstracts that
we used to and we wanted the Research school to continue and also a
panel discussion to come up. The article of Piet Hoebeke, a physician
from Belgium, about “Urotherapy for 20 years, what have we learned?” inspired
us to ask him to moderate the panel discussion, which he did in a professional
and excellent way. However, the question still remains why a doctor
wrote this article – why did not you or one of the well experienced
urotherapists or nurses within the paediatric urology field, wrote
it? Next article about our experiences must be written of an urotherapist
I believe. I hereby challenge you to do so!
This spring a lot of important actions took place for our group;
first we got the opportunity to receive the Journal of Paediatric Urology
(J Ped Urol), which is a scientific, medical journal, looking forward
to receive articles from nurses. Second one of our members, Janet Fishwick,
a well experienced nurse (caring for children and adolescents who need
to learn self catheterization), became a member of the editorial board
of J Ped Urol. Third three of our members defended their thesis; Marian
van der Weide (The Netherlands), Birgitta Lindehall (Sweden) and my
self:
* Marian van der Weide.
Lower urinary tract dysfunction after renal transplantation
in children and adults.
An electronic link is not available but the
articles are published as follows:
Urology 2004; 63 (3): 442-446 and
2006; 67: 1060-1065, and in Journal of Urology 2001; 166: 1237-1241
and 2006; 175: 297-302. The last article is accepted for publication
in the BJU Int and will be published soon.
* Birgitta Lindehall
Teenagers and young adults with myelomeningocele and
clean intermittent catheterisation – urological
and psychosocial aspects.
* Ulla-Britt Jansson
Urinary bladder function and acquisition of bladder
control in healthy children.

Hopefully, at least parts of the results will be presented and discussed
at the next meeting, which will take place in Nice (France) the last
week of April, 2008. I am looking forward to be seeing you all then.
We welcome all papers from nurses within the urological field; either
it’s about research or clinical matters as long as it follows
the scientific rules and being appropriate and useful for nurses. The
deadline for abstract submission is October the 31st – do not
forget!
If you have any questions or thoughts about our group or the next
meeting; how to participate or proposals of the content – please
do not hesitate to contact me ullabritt.jansson@vgregion.se
I wish you all a nice autumn and good luck in your work!
